“All you need to know to start Beekeeping in South Kerry”

(includes 1 hour for lunch – lunch not included)

A one day classroom event plus a ‘hands-on’ day at a local Apiary (subsequent date/time to be fixed in consultation with the students on the first day). In this workshop you will understand the life cycle of the honey bee, the equipment and techniques employed in beekeeping, the annual cycle of work for the beekeeper. Have some basic hands-on experience of handling live bees. Understand and have hands-on experience of health and safety as applicable to beekeeping both for the beekeeper and the general public. Have the opportunity to be with an experienced beekeeper when opening and inspecting a hive of bees.

p.s. Because of the natural genetic purity of the native honey bees in this locality, South West Kerry is of international significance to beekeeping not only throughout Ireland but also for the whole of Northern Europe – so this is a great place to start beekeeping!!
