“All you need to know to start Beekeeping in South Kerry”
Day 1: [March date to be confirmed]
TECH AMERGIN
Community Arts & Education Centre, Waterville
10am – 5pm
(includes 1 hour for lunch – lunch not included)
A one day classroom event plus a ‘hands-on’ day at a local Apiary (subsequent date/time to be fixed in consultation with the students on the first day). In this workshop you will understand the life cycle of the honey bee, the equipment and techniques employed in beekeeping, the annual cycle of work for the beekeeper. Have some basic hands-on experience of handling live bees. Understand and have hands-on experience of health and safety as applicable to beekeeping both for the beekeeper and the general public. Have the opportunity to be with an experienced beekeeper when opening and inspecting a hive of bees.
Fee: €tba (2 days) (Supported by the Kerry Education and Training Board Community Education Fund)
Course Tutors: Sue & Russell Jackson, Iveragh Beekeepers Association
p.s. Because of the natural genetic purity of the native honey bees in this locality, South West Kerry is of international significance to beekeeping not only throughout Ireland but also for the whole of Northern Europe – so this is a great place to start beekeeping!!

Hi. I would be interested in your course. Could you please let me know the dates when available.
Thank you
Hi Kevin, thanks for your enquiry about this course – sorry for rather late reply – which, as it happens is not a 100% bad thing as the proposed date has changed a few times and now looks fairly certain for Saturday 12th April 2014 at Tech Amergin, Waterville (although the venue could possibly change to another nearby). I don’t know if you’re one of the ones who already signed-up for the event, but if not please get in touch with Angela at Tech Amergin (www.techamergin.com/workshops/current-workshops). You might also send me a text on 087 1655 484 if you’re still interested. Thanks, Russell.
Hi I missed this course. Did you run it? If not I would like to register.
Hi Tara, thanks for your enquiry!
Yes, the first part of the course (Day 1 – 6hrs – Class Room Lectures & Practical Workshop) in Tech Amergin Waterville ran as scheduled on Saturday 12th April; however the second part (Day 2 – 4hrs – Revision Tutorial and Apiary Visit to look into a bee colony) will take place on Sunday 8th June in Ballinskelligs – weather permitting.
If you wanted to join the course for this second day – which would be worthwhile I think – then Tech Amergin would charge €15.
Give me a ring if you would like to discuss it or if you want to find out more about beekeeping and beekeepers in South and West Kerry.
Russell 🙂
Do you have plans to run this course again please?
In 2020 or 2021?
Hi Aisling, thanks for asking❗️
We certainly have plans to run the course again but obviously can’t say when at the moment.
In the meantime we are trying to support people who are interested in beekeeping and thinking about starting up. If you’d like to take it further now you can email our dedicated address ibeekeepers@tigin.org with your contact details and we could chat online or by phone. Best wishes for happiness and safety…
